I am so excited to write this review today! I have been delving into the world of 3D printing and I am continuously amazed by the technology that exists. In this post I’ll be talking about a fantastic 3D pen that virtually brings your art to life. Now I’m not saying it is going to get up and start dancing, (at least not at this point in time) but it will certainly pop off the page in unimaginable ways.

What is a 3D pen?
A 3D pen is a device that is used to draw, but without the use of ink or lead.
3D pens require a special type of plastic filament (ABS or PLA) that is warmed inside the body of the pen until it reaches a melting point. The melted liquid plastic inside is then pushed from the pen onto a surface to cool and harden.
Inside of the pen is a heating mechanism that controls the temperature and also there are typically controls for the speed the plastic is ejected from the nozzle.
This incredible device can allow you to design virtually anything in 3D. You draw with it like a regular pen except you can use it to layer your artwork into marvelous 3D designs.

Let’s hop right into the MYNT3D Super 3D Pen that puts 3D printing into the palm of your hand. After careful review of multiple 3D pens on the market I found this to be one of the better choices for affordable in home use.
I chose it not only because I think it is functional and budget friendly, but user friendly for the whole family.
Let’s go over some of the important features that make this 3D pen unique.

The Design
I admire the simple design of this 3D pen. There aren’t a ton of confusing bells and whistles. Nor is there an LED display.
The 3D pen stylus itself is extremely lightweight and ergonomic for great control while doodling.
This 3D pen also comes with an AC adaptor power cord and features an ultrasonic nozzle.
The speed slider is conveniently located at the side of the pen to adjust the flow of filament. The power indicator lights up red to let you know if your pen is powered.
The flashing green light indicates that the pen is heating, and a solid green light means the 3D pen is ready to go!
The Cost
I think the most notable feature of this 3D pen is its affordable cost. While cost can fluctuate some pens can cost around $80 dollars.
This pen is great for beginners and more experience artists while being wallet friendly.
What Kind of Filament Does the MYNTED Super 3D Pen Need?
This 3D pen is compatible with 1.75mm ABS and PLA filament.
What is the difference between the two filaments?
PLA or Poly Lactic Acid is a plant based organic material used for 3D printing. It has a much lower melting point than ABS and allows for higher quality of control when printing. This PLA material also comes in a wide assortment of colors to choose from.
PLA is much safer to work with in terms of fumes and is much less prone to print with error. A higher level of detail is possible with PLA. It is not quite as flexible as ABS and should not be stored in high temperatures.
ABS or Acylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is an oil-based thermoplastic polymer that melts at around 221 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to ABS having a high melting point it may warp if cooled too quickly when working with it.
ABS requires ventilation because it produces fumes. It is typically used in professional applications and not quite as often for hobbyists.
ABS requires a heated bed or surface to print on and may be difficult for beginners to use. In addition, ABS is known for being more flexible than PLA filament.

- Temperature adjustment is done with a tool. Could be tedious for non-technical users.
My Overall Opinion of This 3D Pen
I think this 3D pen is a perfect starter pen to try out. It is super affordable and comes with everything you need to get doodling right away.
That being said I think there may be some slight kinks when it comes to choosing a filament. It does appear that PLA is more beginner friendly than ABS. I would recommend snagging some PLA to try in case you aren’t pleased with the ABS included.
Overall, I feel like this would make an awesome gift for any level of artist. It isn’t super technical, yet it has many features that more professional pens have. Also, you can always upgrade to a more expensive higher quality 3D pen in the future.
